This pendulum damping tester (Konig pendulum) is used to determine the hardness of paints, coatings and varnish films. It is a common instrument for coating hardness testing in the paint industry. Coating hardness is evaluated by measuring the damping time (seconds) of pendulum swing attenuation on the coating surface.
Working Principle: Two stainless steel balls on the pendulum are supported on the dried coating surface, swinging at a fixed period. Softer surfaces cause faster attenuation (shorter time from 6° to 3°), while harder surfaces cause slower attenuation. Hardness is expressed as damping time: the product of swing count within the specified angle range and the swing period.
Two Pendulum Types Available:
Konig pendulum (K-type) : Standard configuration, weight 200±0.2g, length 500±1mm, steel ball diameter 5mm, period 1.4s, swing time on glass plate 250±10s
Persoz pendulum (P-type) : Available upon request

Operation Steps:
Place on vibration-free work table, level the instrument
Connect power and photoelectric tube, install control handles
Zero calibration, adjust photoelectric tube to 3° or 4° position
Place test panel on tray, gently lower pendulum onto panel
Set start handle to 6° or 12°, release pendulum
Automatically record swing count from 6°→3° or 12°→4°
Calculate damping time t = T × n
Precautions:
Test environment: 23±2℃, 50±5% RH, no airflow
Clean glass plate with ethanol or solvent before each use
Regular verification with standard glass plate
Avoid strong light (affects photoelectric counting)
Do not move Konig pendulum upper weight (adjusts 1.4s period)
Always use instrument cover during testing
