This heavy dynamic penetrometer is specifically designed for mechanical stratification and determination of physical and mechanical properties of soil layers in railway engineering and deep foundation investigation. During testing, a 63.5kg donut hammer is dropped from a height of 76cm to drive a standard cone probe into the soil layer via the probe rod. The blow count required for each 10cm penetration is recorded. Based on the blow count, soil layer density, mechanical properties, and bearing capacity can be assessed.
The instrument mainly consists of a cone probe, probe rods (42mm diameter thickened joint drill rods), and a 63.5kg donut hammer.
