Product Features & Attributes
This cross cut tester (cross hatch adhesion tester) is used to make uniform grid cuts of specified sizes on coatings. Adhesion is evaluated by assessing the integrity of the coating within the grids and rated by grade. Primarily used for cross cut adhesion testing of organic coatings, suitable for both laboratory and field applications.
Working Principle: The coating is cut with a specified tool to create a grid pattern penetrating to the substrate. The grid pattern is evaluated by a grading system to determine the coating's resistance to separation from the substrate (adhesion grade).
Multiple Specifications Available:
Blade Spacing | Applicable Film Thickness | Substrate Type |
|---|---|---|
1mm | 0~60μm | Hard Substrate |
2mm | 61~120μm | Hard Substrate |
2mm | 0~120μm | Soft Substrate |
3mm | 121~250μm | Hard/Soft Substrate |
Grid Count Options:
25 Grids: For smaller area testing
100 Grids: For standard area testing
Blade Types:
6-Edge Blade: Cost-effective and durable
4-Edge Blade: Standard configuration
Single-Edge Blade: Includes spare blade
Technical Parameters:
Blade tip straightness: ≤0.003mm (1mm spacing) / ≤0.006mm (2mm spacing)
Tooth tip width: 0.05mm
Test temperature: 23±2℃
Test humidity: 50±5%RH
Adhesion Grade Classification:
ISO Grade | ASTM Grade | Description |
|---|---|---|
0 | 5B | Edges completely smooth, no peeling (Best) |
1 | 4B | Small peeling at intersections, ≤5% damaged |
2 | 3B | Peeling area >5% but <15% |
3 | 2B | Peeling area >15% but <35% |
4 | 1B | Peeling area >35% |
Operation Steps:
Place test panel on a flat surface
Hold tester handle, keep blade perpendicular to panel surface
Cut with uniform pressure at steady speed
Rotate panel 90°, repeat cuts to form cross-hatch grid
Apply and remove tape over grid
Evaluate grade at 23±2℃, 50±5%RH
Precautions:
Cuts should be uniform, penetrating to substrate but not too deep
Thick coatings may invalidate the test
Test under standard temperature and humidity conditions
Tape method required for special cases
Maintenance:
Avoid impact to blade edges
Clean and apply anti-rust oil after use
Regularly check blade straightness
Available in three blade spacing specifications (1mm, 2mm, 3mm), two grid count options (25, 100), and three blade types (6-edge, 4-edge, single-edge) to suit various film thicknesses and testing standards.
Mainly used in paint manufacturers, coating contractors, automotive coating industry, furniture manufacturers, quality inspection institutions, research universities, and more for coating adhesion testing.
